How to choose the right stud bolt
Stud bolts are specified by diameter, thread pitch, overall length, thread form at each end, material grade and nut requirement. For flange work, the flange standard and pressure class decide the stud size and length.
Common stud configurations
- Fully threaded stud – thread along the whole length, the usual choice for flanges with a nut at each end.
- Stud bolt with nuts – supplied as a ready-to-install set.
- Tap-end and double-end studs – a short thread at one end screws into a tapped hole and the other end takes a nut.
- U bolts – bent studs that clamp pipes, tubes and round sections to a support.

Selecting length for a flange joint
