How to choose a shank hook
A shank hook is chosen when the hook must be mounted rigidly in a block, beam or fixture rather than hung from a chain or sling. The shank passes through the mounting and is secured with a nut, often with a thrust bearing so the hook can rotate.
Shank hook or eye hook?
A shank hook mounts into equipment. An eye hook has a closed eye that connects to a chain, shackle or sling. Choose by how the hook will be attached, not just by size.
What to specify
- Shank diameter, thread and length to suit the block or fixture.
- Throat opening needed for the sling or ring that will sit in the hook.
- Material and finish for the working environment.
- Whether a safety latch is required.
- The documented working load required for the application.
Why forged?
Forging keeps the grain of the steel flowing continuously around the bend of the hook, which gives better strength and fatigue resistance than casting. This matters most at the hook's throat and shank, where stress is concentrated.
