How to choose a wire rope pulley
The most important rule is that the pulley groove must match the rope. A groove that is too narrow pinches the rope, and one that is too wide lets it flatten. Both shorten rope life.
What to specify
- Rope diameter – the groove is machined to suit a specific rope size.
- Sheave diameter – larger sheaves bend the rope less and extend its life; follow the ratio required by the rope or equipment manufacturer.
- Bore and axle – bore size, bush or bearing type and axle diameter.
- Arrangement – single, double or triple sheave, and whether a side plate or block is needed.
- Material and finish – steel for general use, stainless steel for marine and corrosive environments.
Inspection
